Northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), often referred to simply as the goshawk is a killer par excellence and therefore has been a favourite of many falconers. Like many Birds of Prey the Male is around a third smaller than the female, but apart from size they are very similar in appearance. A distinctive white stripe runs along the supra-orbital ridge, wider at the back of the head. The eye is a piercing Orange, the beak is black at the tip fading to blue-grey with yellow waxy cere. The Nape and back are a grey getting progressively darker along the wing coverts, secondaries and primaries. Underparts are an off white with dark horizontal barring. The underside of the tail has 4 or 5 bars. Legs are shorter in comparison to the Sparrow-hawk but thicker and a lot more powerful armed with razor sharp talons.
