Merlin (Falco columbarius)

The Merlin is the UK’s smallest bird of prey, it is in Spring and Summer months found in its upland moorland breeding areas then in mid to late Autumn, as the colder weather approaches they will often take shelter in lowland and coastal stretches, sheltering in roosts such as reed beds and heaths. It is estimated that the UK has between 900 – 1500 breeding pairs. It feeds mainly on small birds, taken close to the ground; watch for Merlin on favoured hunting perches, or rocky outcrops giving them an elevated position to spot their prey.
